Racing Past Media, the research project collating and assembling the first combined film and television archive covering the first thirty years of the Formula One World Championship, has announced three major new research collaborations.

Alongside the partnership with ITV Sport, announced last year, RPM has also reached agreement with BRM, and also The John Tate Collection, which is housed at The National Motor Museum, Beaulieu.

The founder of the Racing Past Media project, broadcaster Steve Rider said;

“We now have a great opportunity to work with bodies of material that can give a vivid insight into the early history of the World Championship. The Media hub that we are creating will give producers and researchers swift access to some remarkable footage amid the growing demand for sports documentary projects”.

The widely praised archive content of the recent Bernie Ecclestone documentary ‘LUCKY’, featured material from the John Tate collection of 1950’s Grand Prix film footage.

Christopher Tate, who administers the collection, said;

“Seeing the history of 1950s and 1960s Grand Prix racing in living colour is so important. My father’s remarkable colour films, through the RPM initiative, open up a huge new audience. Johnny Tate may have been an amateur filmmaker, but his prize-winning films were truly professional in production quality. The friendships and relationships he was able to build up, gave his productions a ‘Drive to Survive’ type of access. The results of his work are something which I, as the filmmaker’s son, am extremely proud. It’s wonderful that they can now be more widely enjoyed “

The BRM film archive is widely recognised as among the most comprehensive, covering the 1960’s and early 1970’s as British motorsport was establishing itself at the highest level….

Simon Owen, Director of British Racing Motors Ltd and Grandson of Sir Alfred Owen said;

“Having just celebrated our 70th anniversary, and last year the 60th anniversary of our World Championship with Graham Hill, this opportunity to research and develop our archive comes at just the right time. There is a lot of restoration and development to be done, but the collaboration with RPM will provide the energy and support to fully activate one of the greatest archives in motor sport”

Also on the platform will be RPM’s recent acquisition of the BHP archive which includes, among varied motor sport content, the largest quality collection of

pre-1990 International rallying totalling over 60 World Championship events, plus documentary coverage and rushes.
